Compound comparison

NAD+ vs NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)

NMN is a precursor the body converts into NAD+, so the two are related, but they are not the same molecule.

Updated September 2026
This page is an educational comparison, not medical advice, and it does not recommend either compound. Regulatory status differs between them; see the table below.

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is an essential coenzyme involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is an oral, direct precursor that the body converts into NAD+. Neither is a peptide, and neither is an approved drug, but both are commonly discussed alongside peptides in longevity research.

At a glance

NAD+NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)
What it isEssential coenzyme (not a peptide) involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair, made by the body from dietary precursorsNicotinamide mononucleotide, an oral direct precursor to NAD+; not a peptide
How it's thought to workCofactor for sirtuins (SIRT1 to SIRT7), proteins involved in DNA repair and energy metabolism; levels are described as declining with ageConverted to NAD+ through the salvage pathway, supplying the coenzyme used by sirtuins, PARP DNA-repair enzymes and mitochondrial energy metabolism
Regulatory statusInjectable NAD+ is not an FDA-approved treatmentNot an approved drug; in September 2025 the FDA concluded NMN is not excluded from the US dietary supplement definition
Strength of evidenceAging research is mostly in animals and labs; a small 2019 human pilot study measured how infused NAD+ is processedSmall, short randomized trials report raised blood NAD+ and some metabolic effects; a 2026 meta-analysis found broad metabolic benefits not evident
Reported side effectsFlushing (warmth and discomfort) that typically passes within 15 to 30 minutes; nauseaMild GI upset, headache, occasional flushing in short trials. Long-term data is limited
Supplied as100mg, 500mg, 1000mgCapsules / powder
Mixing math example500 mg + 5 mL BAC water = 100,000 mcg/mL, 1 mg per unitNo reconstitution step

Key differences

NAD+ itself acts as a cofactor for sirtuins, proteins involved in DNA repair, mitochondrial function and energy metabolism. NMN works one step earlier: it is converted into NAD+ through the salvage pathway, supplying the coenzyme for those same processes.

Injectable NAD+ is not an FDA-approved treatment. NMN is not an approved drug; in letters dated September 29, 2025, the FDA concluded that NMN is not excluded from the dietary supplement definition, reversing its earlier position. Availability and labeling vary by market.

NAD+ is associated with flushing that typically passes within 15 to 30 minutes, and nausea. Short human trials of NMN report mild GI upset, headache and occasional flushing.

What the research covers

Human research on directly administered NAD+ is small, including a 2019 pilot study of how infused NAD+ is processed. NMN has small, short randomized trials reporting higher blood NAD+ levels and some metabolic effects, and a 2026 meta-analysis of randomized trials found that broad metabolic benefits were not evident. Long-term human data is limited for both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NAD+ and NMN?

NAD+ is the coenzyme itself. NMN is a precursor that the body converts into NAD+ through the salvage pathway.

Are NAD+ and NMN peptides?

No. Neither is a peptide, though both are commonly discussed alongside peptides.

Is NAD+ or NMN FDA-approved?

Neither is an approved drug. Injectable NAD+ is not an FDA-approved treatment. In September 2025 the FDA concluded that NMN is not excluded from the US dietary supplement definition.

Does NMN raise NAD+ levels?

Small, short randomized trials report higher blood NAD+ levels after NMN, but a 2026 meta-analysis found broad metabolic benefits were not evident.
