What it is
Mazdutide is a dual agonist of the GLP-1 receptor and the glucagon receptor, and is an analog of oxyntomodulin, a naturally occurring hormone. It is studied for weight management and glycemic (blood sugar) control, with much of the trial data coming from China.
China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved mazdutide for chronic weight management in adults with overweight or obesity, announced by the developer Innovent on June 27, 2025. Innovent announced on September 19, 2025 that the NMPA had also approved mazdutide for glycemic (blood sugar) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not approved by the FDA.
How it's thought to work
Mazdutide is an oxyntomodulin-based dual agonist that combines GLP-1-driven appetite suppression with glucagon-driven energy expenditure and lipid (fat) metabolism.
What the research says
In GLORY-1, a phase 3 trial in 610 Chinese adults with overweight or obesity, the mean change in body weight at week 48 was -11.00% and -14.01% in the two mazdutide groups, compared with +0.30% on placebo.
A phase 3 trial in Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes reported greater reductions in HbA1c (a measure of average blood sugar) and body weight with mazdutide than with dulaglutide, another GLP-1 receptor agonist, after 28 weeks. Much of the trial data for mazdutide comes from China.
Reported side effects
The most frequently reported adverse events in the GLORY-1 trial were gastrointestinal and mostly mild to moderate in severity. In the type 2 diabetes trial against dulaglutide, the most common treatment-emergent adverse events were diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and gastrointestinal events were more frequent with mazdutide than with dulaglutide.
Reconstitution
Mazdutide is supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder and is typically reconstituted with bacteriostatic (BAC) water before use. It commonly comes in 10 mg and 20 mg vials. The amount of peptide in the vial is fixed; the water added only changes how concentrated the solution is.
Worked example. A 10 mg vial is 10,000 mcg. Reconstituted with 2 mL of BAC water, that works out to 10,000 mcg ÷ 2 mL = 5,000 mcg/mL. On a U-100 insulin syringe, where each unit is 0.01 mL, each unit holds 5,000 × 0.01 = 50 mcg. A 20 mg vial with 2 mL comes out at 10,000 mcg/mL instead, or 100 mcg per unit. Use the peptide reconstitution calculator to work out the concentration and units for any vial size and water volume.
Important notes
Mazdutide is approved in China for chronic weight management and for type 2 diabetes. It is not FDA-approved in the US. Material sold outside a regulated pharmacy channel is not independently checked for quality or purity.

Frequently asked questions
These questions cover the same ground as the sections above, in a shorter format.
What is mazdutide?
A dual GLP-1 and glucagon receptor agonist (an oxyntomodulin analog) approved by China's NMPA for weight management and type 2 diabetes. It is not FDA-approved.
How is mazdutide thought to work?
It is thought to combine GLP-1-driven appetite suppression with glucagon-driven energy expenditure and lipid metabolism.
What does the research on mazdutide say?
In GLORY-1, a phase 3 trial in Chinese adults, mean body weight changed by -11.00% and -14.01% at week 48 in the two mazdutide groups versus +0.30% on placebo. A phase 3 diabetes trial found greater HbA1c and weight reductions than dulaglutide.
What are the reported side effects of mazdutide?
Mostly gastrointestinal and mild to moderate: diarrhea, nausea and vomiting were most common in the diabetes trial, and gastrointestinal events were more frequent than with dulaglutide.
How much is one unit from a 10 mg Mazdutide vial?
With 2 mL of BAC water, a 10 mg vial is 5,000 mcg/mL, so one unit on a U-100 syringe (0.01 mL) holds 50 mcg.
